Great minds?

1060 words today. And I think I had a specific blog topic, but I’ve now forgotten. Blast!

OH YEAH!

In poking around the ol’ Internet, I came across the genre of ‘Urban Fantasy,’ which is apparently a kissing cousin to ‘Paranormal Romance,’ the defining feature being the centrality of the core romance. From JeannieHolmes.com:

“The best litmus test to determine if a story is urban fantasy or paranormal romance is to ask the following question: “If the romance between Character A and Character B were removed, would the plot still stand as a viable storyline?” If the answer is “yes,” chances are good it’s urban fantasy. If the answer is “no,” it’s most likely paranormal romance.”

I mention this because I’m pretty sure that HUNTING MIDNIGHT is moving into, or has always been an Urban Fantasy more than anything else. I was calling it Paranormal Mystery and somesuch, but I think my tropes and plot fit into UF a little nicer. I based some initial research off of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which is considered to be a seminal story in Urban Fantasy.

The fun part was this: I started looking up other examples and works, and found Laurell K Hamilton’s Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter series. My female lead in HUNTING MIDNIGHT is named Alena Bisk: exact same initials, syllabic structure, hell they share about half the same letters! It’s such a coincidence that I think I need to comically weave it into the story somehow. Great minds think alike, or something like that? Heh.
