I didn’t blog this past weekend, and instead of retroactively going back and adding posts with those two dates on them, I’m simply going to record the ‘no-blog’ status and pick up where I left off (like a normal person). I didn’t write much, but I did jot some words down to prevent the day from being a “zero” day, re: words.
This is for a few reasons.
- Even if it’s literally a three word sentence in a story I never end up finishing, the act alone forces my thoughts to coalesce around writing. It ensures I never go 24 hours without actually actioning on the idea of writing. It’s a tiny ask, even on the deepest, darkest days. It’s possible that I’ll lose this discipline between now and the two milestone days (July 31, Dec 31), but for now, we’re going strong.
- I would like to legitimately craft a mega-post entitled “I wrote fiction every day for a year, and here are the results.” I want the main stuff to be infographic’d, which I’ll share with the reddit writing community and probably r/dataisbeautiful for that sweet, sweet karma. If I fail to write at least one word per day, then my claim is weakened to something like “I tracked my fiction writing…” or “I wrote fiction every day for 7 months.” Something about the size and narrative of a year delivers a wallo, ya know?
- I am legit curious to see the results. I know it’ll be healthy for my writing… and like I now have a sense of the workload required to produce 20K/month, I’d like a sense of the ‘write every day for a year (and do other writing stuff good too)’ of this outcome as well.
Okay, that’s sort of like 2.5 reasons, but whatever.
Weekend actual stats were: 48 words on Saturday and 31 on Sunday. What I actually did:
- Caught up with two different friends, was social with a new friend group (board games then more classic goin’ out ‘n’ drinkin’)
- Played some epic Dungeons and Dragons
Today (Monday) I’ve not yet written words, and have some ‘operational’ stuff to do before I take a swing. It may not 1,000 words, but it’ll be more than 0.
Update
Wrote 318 words in a new self imposed challenge: writing short stories of 800 words or less, that adhere to basic story structure. Much tougher than it seems, as I figured it would be, but already dreamed up an interesting concept and possibly my own writing prompt to give to the reddit community.
